A Grayer Day I Have Never Seen

by RodG

A grayer wintry day I've never seen
though here in open country they're not rare.
It wasn't fog that filled the skies above
and cleaved to acres of snow-dotted fields.
A wall of cloud unbroken rose and stretched
o'er land much like a king-sized fitted sheet.
The flat terrain was bleak and featureless
as was the lengthy rural road I trod.

Lead gray would have described my funk that day.
An unremitting chill enwrapped my soul.
No, not depression but a sense of loss
and deprivation surely winter-caused.
The other seasons brought forth life not death,
Gray things I'd seen all lacked vitality.
