Shades of Empty

by BethShelby

Welcome echoes from my past
I've come to call on you at last
Because a memory gently taunting
Has made me victim of a haunting
And the wound which scars my heart
Is a part
Bound by the shades of empty

With troubled thoughts I drift soul-jaded
Through halls where sound has faded
Under halos of the moonlight
I clutch my cloak around me in the night
Then my ears are pierced by the scream of a dying child
The echoes pile
Around the shades of empty

And in the fractured haze I knew
The thousand things I'd hoped were true
Things assumed without knowing
Things seen without them showing
Things in diaries never shared
I'd not dared
Erase the shades of empty

"Soul", I cried "You cannot see
How keeping silent troubles me."
Seize my hand that I might feel you
Let me understand the real you
But my thoughts like feathers flew
Settling on the shades of empty

Then the troubled masses swarmed
Toward the totum they had formed
And the sirens wailed disaster
In a world declining faster
The words of wisdom which we read were written across the the darkening sky
"The time is nigh"
They evaporated like the shades of empty

I never understood what this song really meant but I found the melody haunting. This one will be the same. It it make no sense, don't let it bother you.

Re-Write A Song writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Poems are Part I of every song with lyrics. Choose a song you love, and re-write the words. Can be a Broadway tune, a pop or country song, even a Christmas carol -any song at all! But whatever it is, you'll help yourself in the polls if you also post a recorded version of the original song when you post the new-and-improved lyrics/contest entry by you. (Because the voters might not be familiar with the tune, so giving them a chance to listen to it will help them "hear" yours!)
