Big City, Big Dreams

Johnny Gage is a grease monkey,
the very best around.
Cars he works on, run just like a top.
Working at the Tow and Fixit,
a garage on Stinson street.
Half a mile from the little coffee shop.

Johnny wasn't happy, though,
with his dead-end job.
Loneliness was also Johnny's plight.
Just got in town a month ago,
and oft he spent his pay,
to ease it, on a lady of the night.

Living in a small apartment,
upstairs from the laundromat,
he dreamed of stardom, getting his big break.
He scanned open auditions, as he ate at the cafe,
the special of the day, Salisbury steak.

Johnny stared up at the TV,
fixed to the cafe wall.
Some eyewitnesses proclaimed that bigfoot lives.
Another story talked about the rise in violent crime.
The guy, sitting next to him said, "What gives?"

"This city is a sewer, they should burn it to the ground."
Then said, "Haven't I seen you here before?"
Johnny just ignored him, the man was clearly drunk,
as he counted cracked-up tiles on the floor.

A commercial on the TV blared about a brand-new toy,
'Get SLIME TIME for the kids, a perfect gift.'
Johnny pushed his plate and dreams aside
and slowly walked back home,
picking up some beer, to help his spirits lift.

He watched the roaches race across
his counter, and felt doubt.
These feelings came and went each passing day.
Still, he was sure he'd wow them
with his talent on the stage,
he'd keep it up until he found a way.

Next day, at the Tow and Fixit,
he would do it all again,
eat the special at the cafe down the street.
Where he scans open auditions,
he would be a star someday,
as the hooker named her price and where to meet.
