frigid park bench
where old man sits unseen
by hurried folks walking by
who give him the cold shoulder ~
as he talks to himself

KAKEKOTOBA is a Japanese poetic device that is a figure of speech in which a pivot word that is identical in pronunciation or comparison -- sounding words is expressed in such a way that it has two or more meanings. FORM 31 SYLLABLES OR LESS in 3 to 5 lines. This poem uses poetry devices (alliteration, personification, metaphor, etc) to suggest several interpretations: first on the literal level, then on a transcendental level (aha!! moment). The poet uses artistic expression with an economical syllable-count. Such brevity is highly valued in Japanese aesthetics, where maximal meaning and reference are sought in a minimal number of syllables.
