Holiday Rituals

by Martie Zuckerman

Turkeys and Indians and corn on the cob;
Pilgrims and pumpkins and a large family mob.
Cornucopias and flowers adorning the table;
Uncle Harry just arrived (he's very unstable).
The silver's been polished, the candles are lit,
Aunt Harriet's in the parlor perfecting her snit!
Yummy cooking aromas are wafting throughout,
As Gramps sips his whiskey about to blackout.
There's football on the TV and out in the yard;
Oh dear, seems Charlie tackled Mabel too hard!
The baby needs changing, the toddlers are bored,
Granny's getting antsy 'cause she's being ignored.
Hours of food prep will be devoured in a flash;
Stuffing with cranberries and creamy tater mash.
They'll fight over a drumstick but never a wing:
(Pondering their departure makes my heart sing)!
Aunt Sally became a vegan, so no bird for her,
If you misspeak Sue's pronoun its considered a slur.
The days of thankfulness seem a thing of the past;
Gratitude and enjoyment just don't seem to last.
These family gatherings are both heaven and hell;
But I'm grateful I have this silly story to tell!
