Audentis Fortuna Iuvat

by Douglas Goff

fear, anger, and loathing ripped at Billy’s soul

the torment of his losses haunting his mind

atrocities of the past had to be confronted, defeated

it’s not going down like that, not this time

sweat beads formed on both men’s foreheads

they stared at each other across the way

not today, he’s not winning today

Jackson smirked at Billy and threw a wink

knowing that he was just a little quicker

his cockiness would be his downfall

neither looked away, fingers twitching, itching

the time had come for one of them to make his move

today, Jackson would kiss the bitter lips of defeat

today, Billy would drink from the goblet of sweet victory

both men swallowed, then Jackson looked down at it, causing Billy to reach

the woman reached in between the two men and stole their prize

snatching the last slice of double cheese pepperoni pizza

Eleanor had made an aggressive, unexpected play

she victoriously scarfed the delicious slice of Italian pie down in three bites

oh Eleanor the Evil, I will break you at next week’s party, Billy glared
