Backyard Stinginess

by HarryT

Sitting at my kitchen table, I gaze out the picture window
Enjoying the rising sun and a pink cotton candy sky,
But something bothered me. It was my observance
Of the meanest occurring in my backyard.

Most animals and birds that come are willing to share
their morning meal of breadcrumbs and wild bird seeds loving
laid on the patio stones by my wife.

Except the squirrels who live in our old maple tree.
They scamper down, chirping with threatening faints and jabs
Small sparrows scatter and chipmunks dart away
Even the fair size rabbit takes his leave, leaving the
Mean, dominating squirrels to gobble their full feed

Before they entered the idyllic scene,
I enjoyed watching a docile rabbit sharing breakfast with the
Little birds and even allowing the lightning quick chipmunks to
Whip in and snap up some breadcrumbs. But when those
Selfish squirrels came lurking and lunging; the sparrows
Winged off and the furry rabbit and chipmunks scampered
Under the bushes, cowering in hiding until the stingy
Squirrels had eaten their fill and climbed back up their tree.

After the greedy guys left, feeling sorry, I scattered more breadcrumbs.
