A Black Jersey Rooster

Shaft

by Sandra Nelms-Ludwig

Shaft strolled across the barnyard

looking straight ahead.

There was no need to look

to the left or look to the right.

As a Black Jersey Rooster,

he was accustomed to being watched.

He was the "baddest" rooster

on the Johnson's farm

and all the neighboring farms.

A striking sight to the hens

and the other roosters.

Weighing about fifteen pounds,

standing about two feet tall

'cause he was from the largest chicken breed

in the U-S-A

and one of the largest in the world.

Hens swooned and clucked

                       clucked

                         and clucked

acting like little chicks when he strutted in their midst.

Hell, he was the "King of the Roost".

Other roosters wondered

about their cocks and their doodle- dos

when Shaft swaggered past.

He told the other roosters once,

and it was enough.

"I'm Shaft and you know me

it's my duty to please the hens' booTies.

I'm Shaft shut your mouth."

The rooster's personality is based on the personality of the Black detective, John Shaft, from the 70's Movie "SHAFT". Shaft was a 1971 American crime action film directed by Gordon Parks and written by Ernest Tidyman and John D. F. Black.

Some of the lyrics from the soundtrack.
***********************************************
Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
(Shaft!)
Ya damn right!
Who is the man
That would risk his neck for his brother man?
(Shaft!)
Can ya dig it?
Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
(Shaft!)
Right on!
You see this cat, Shaft is a bad motha-
(Shut your mouth!)
But I'm talkin' about Shaft!
(Then we can dig it!)
He's a complicated man,
But no one understands him but his woman
(John Shaft!)
