A Soldier writes to his family

Dear Some one at Home

by Cass Carlton

>Hey Pa! What's it like in gaol?
Have you hit the library yet?
Shall I send a file in a cake?
Or would you sooner have
A stash Of hash
Sent in the Family Bible.
Let me know Old Man, I'll see what I can do.

Yeah!! I'll fix it so your sorry butt
Won't leave gaol again
Never again to raise a fist to my mother
Or to beat fear into my sisters
Like you tried with me.

Dear Mum, how's the arm healing?
Your bandages will be off soon.
I received your last letter on Sunday
And read it during Roll Call
My sisters are doing well at school
Now there's nothing to fear  at home.

Angie is an animal lover
With hopes of becoming a vet
Now she has no fear of failing.
The Old Man's poisonous lies
Forgotten in a new beginning.

Lou Anne was made for nursing.
Pa would "injure" one of her dolls
And dirty it with ketchup
She'd wash it clean and bind it well
Singing a lullabye to soothe its tears
Fighting down her own tears as she sang.

He was a cruel man,Mum,
The taste of other peoples' fear
Fed him like a vampire's banquet.
I hope he enjoys his dinners now.

Mum, they've given me another dog.
His name is Charge (rhymes with Sarge)
And we're getting along just fine
We were on patrol last night,
When he stopped and wouldn't budge
i saw a movement up ahead
And cleared it out with a grenade
Charge went in for the kill
But I held him back.

He reminds me (a bit) of Sabre
Same ears pricked forward, same nose,
Black and wet and ever busy.
His eyes are different though.
Sabre never lost the laughter in his
Charge's eyes are allseeing, wise and cold.
His tail wags the same though.

Yes he's a good dog. I'll miss him.
Because I'm coming home.
Yeah, my quota came up last week
The captain came and told me himself
Said he'll be glad to see the last of me
(The handshake told a different story).

Appears the Captain's headed home too
He wants to take a dog home for the company "he says"
He likes Charge and I know he wants him
Well, I won't stand in his way.
I'll be seeing you soon, your loving son John
