Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A respite by the River
A chapter in the book The Inn at Blackpool

The Inn at Shella Rue

by Stu Harrell

So we wondered where Pixies gather
To plot a wistful scheme
On the banks of the Rapidan River
Near a box shack by a stream

They made merry with their little bowls
Give aid to the Yankee grade
Along with a little nursing
John Rebs from an Irish Brigade

Here they met sweet Cindy
And indulged in drinks and dice
Now and then a captured Reb
Could sip a sliver of ice

The battle raged so badly
Cold Harbor left us cold
Thrown at the deepest trenches
The muskets of the Southern bold

Old Emerald Isle sent her young'uns
Many wore the Yankee blue
But some were very southern boys
Felt a little gray was due

Older bars of Dublin town
Welcomed feasts so tried and true
The gathering spots wound the streets
A feast called Shella Rue

What better name for a gathering spot
While nursing showed it's due
Many men would pass this way
Many later paid so true

Riders sang "they be burnin' Richmond"
At last the end is near
A church bell in the distance
It's final chime so dear

Amidst the fading horsemen
Racing home to friendly view
Ole Dixie is finally falling
Put a torch to the Shella Rue
