We can understand

Our Clan

Dedicated to Sandra Nelms-Ludwig

Smashed furniture thrown down the hall,

Hiding and trying to be very small,

Bullet holes shot into the wall.

In school, telling no one, pretending normality

At home, constant turmoil and physicality

He was mean and filled with brutality.

Neighbors back then looked the other way

The cops would come but didn't stay

They never took that man away.

When I write about it, most can't understand

Only those who also have the brand

And have lived it firsthand.
