He placed it on the mantlepiece
between the ticking clock and beeswax
candle, given to him by his grandmother,
who knew how precious candles were in
blackouts, since her life was lived amidst
the horrors of World War two.

It still sits in that self same spot, surviving
the lure of tiny hands or teenage trysts.

Though dog-eared and with its pages foxed,
daily I blow away another layer of dust and in
the silence that descends in the world
of empty- nesters, I open a page randomly.
A pressed yellow rose leaf exudes a musky scent.

The story of Jesus at Cana for a young couple's nuptials
lies open in front of me.
I give thanks for The Good Book that guided our steps and
for a beloved spouse who smiles down upon us from his
eternal home.
