Self righteousness

by royowen

Where once we looked for communists
those lurking under beds.
We now condemn those racist slurs
just like we did those reds.

I don't know why some dirty minds
self righteously expose
a label's fruit of innocence
a callous juxtapose.

There is a cheese that we will buy
that tastes just like a dream.
Founder is, Edward William Coon
a racist's callous scheme.

They're saying this offends the pure,
how can this ever be?
We'll raise him from his grave and say
"you're racist - can't you see?"

How could your father take that name
for Coon's a non de plume?
That will offend the coloured folk
please change to Smith...and soon.

One of the things that has always been in abundance is self righteousness, Jesus berated the Pharisees for heaping burdens on others that they would not carry or bear themselves.
This poem is about exactly this. There is a very high quality cheese manufactured in Australia with the brand name of Coon cheese, the founder of the company is one Edward William Coon, some folk want the name changed because Coon is offensive to certain coloured folk, but is that that a bit precious? Political correctness is endemic, and quite frankly, it will never chase away prejudice. Prejudice is genuinely wrong, but it places a question on freedom, changing ones attitudes, if wrong, should be normal, but forcing folk to so is undemocratic.

Thanks for reading. R.Owen
