Broken Heart

by HarryT

I was anxious on this Friday night.
Had a date for dinner to celebrate
Setting our spring marriage date
I bounced up her front stairs
Gave my usual three doorbell rings

She opened the door with tears in her eyes
Said come on in, we need to talk
Noticed my engagement ring was not
On her finger, she thrust her hand forward
Slowly unfolded her delicate fingers

My ring sat on the palm of her hand
Little diamond sadly stared up at me
She said, I wanted to tell you weeks ago
I’m sorry but I’ve changed my mind
I’ve met another and given my heart

Please understand I can’t marry you
Stung in shock, I had nothing to say
She said, please go, he’s on his way
I climbed into my car, thinking
I’ll show her, I’ll crash into a tree

Tears poured out as I drove home
Spent three days in my mother's basement

Years later she called, said she made a mistake
I said, sorry too late, I’m in love with another
She came to my rescue after you deserted me

I now have a very loving, happy life
But even today, my first love from
Time to time will steal into my mind
