Being the parent of a poet.
You May Never Know
If your child is a poet
They may write sonnets about girls who wear bonnets
Quatrains about boats and planes, getting caught out in the rain
They might write Limericks about dirty tricks
Or something worse, like a naughty free verse
If your child is a poet
They might write something about you that is not true
And you may never even know it.
Preoccupied, their fears they may hide
In pursuit of their muse, they'll use any excuse
No need to be jealous if they seem overzealous
The die is cast, this poem's better than the last.
If your child is a poet
They may write a senryu, to criticize you
Or a villanelle that doesn't sit well
A ballad about salad
Or a pantoum about what you consume
If your child is a poet
They might write something about you that is not true
And you may never even know it.

When you are the parent of a poet, you are never sure about whom or what they are writing.
