Departures

by zanya

Mike shifted uncomfortably. The queue seemed endless.

Noon  on a Saturday  in July, he was ready to fly off to catch some sun.

He glanced  at the throng snaking through security. Heads bent, most scrolled endlessly on phones.

Rays of sun from the unexpected heatwave illuminated the luggage,  piled high against a wall in departures.

The flashing sign indicated a further five hours of waiting.

"Bedlam," Mike muttered as he wiped beads of perspiration from his brow.

Buddy Joe sent him a pic of a crowded beach. Mike sighed deeply.

Turning around, Mike hurried towards the exit  onto the street.
