NightHawk

by Thomas Troso

I've always had a fear of birds.
So naturally,
I resent the nighthawk
who pecks at my temporal lobes.

I waste nights
with my thoughts
for hours
and hours and
hours and hou––BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

Look what I did.
My brain
is a beetle.
When it finally feels
the sleep-inducing relief
of my pillow
and the warming sensation
of my blanket,
the nighthawk
knows to begin
the hunt.

No lullaby, and
no ridiculous
amount of sheep counted
could stop
the hunt.
