Summer Rain

On scorching summer days when skin
would blister in the shade,
we'd watch and hope the afternoon
would blacken as we played.

A sky now changing cinder gray
would cause us all to stare
and cup our ears to listen for
rare rumbling way out there.

As clouds swept in, the showers came
and wetted down the street,
but we romped on the sodden lawn,
the rain a wondrous treat.

Our shorts and socks and shoes got soaked,
but did we rascals care?
We leaped and spun while on the run
drops flaring from our hair.

There were no fights or arguments
whenever we got wet.
We loved the rain and getting drenched.
We really relished it.
