Excellent
Not yet exceptional. When the exceptional rating is reached this is highlighted
A pesky little guy who woudn't take no for an answer.

Door County Beggar

by HarryT

A cool wind pushes white caps against the
Sandy shore, para-sails of green, yellow
Blue climb into cotton candy clouds

Friends gather about a small table
Share cheese, honey mustard, wine and
Wafer crackers from an old picnic hamper

A lurking onlooker walks like an Egyptian
Stops, meets our eyes, squawks a warning
Staking claim to his new soliciting ground

We try to ignore him as he skulks
But he marches, pauses and stares
We watch him, surmise his desires

Shall we give into his petition?
Better not, might encourage others
We try to ignore his persistence

No longer able to endure his insistence
I lob a bit of cheese high over the water
He takes off like a Grumman Avenger

Plucks the soaring scrap from the air,
Powers up toward a low hanging cloud
Circles back over the sand and lands

Returns victorious, strolls his seagull strut
Stops, eyes us, mews a beseeching appeal
Seeking another share of our lakeside lunch
