The death of a Vietnam Veteran

Hello, I Know

by Sandra Nelms-Ludwig

Awaken
to a rapidly beating Edgar Allan Poe’s tell-tale heart,
thunderous thudding filling her chest.
Emanating outward each throbbing pulsation
physically pained her.

Love droplets created a meandering pathway
down her cheeks
quietly joining the damp folds
of her sweaty nightgown.
Her mother-wit genes
knew it was a harbinger
that her beloved brother’s valiantly fought battle
to win a few additional fragile morphine laden moments
had ended.
The phone rang.
She answered, “Hello, I know.”

My Loved One writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a Poem about a Loved One

My brother is presently fighting a hard battle against cancer. He was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and has battled for the past 10 years various types of cancer. As soon as he is in remission from one bout, it moves to another area of his internal organs. What's extra sad about my brother's situation is that he was the only son and was not to be sent to Vietnam. However, he was drafted and had to go. He does not know I have written this poem. It's best he does not know. He is still hopeful for a miracle.
