My rescued dog

Sir Duke

by Sandra Nelms-Ludwig

There’s a kept male in my house.
Yeah me, Ms. Independent keeps
a "spoiled" male.
He exhibits quite a few stereotypical traits.
Listens selectively.
Wants meals prepared on his timetable.
Cuddling is optional.
Possessive is his nature.
Demands attention.
Suffers from separation anxiety.
Hates getting medical care.
Sadly, it’s needed too often.
Trickery must be used for all meds.
Falls asleep anywhere he deems comfortable.
Said I wasn’t going to allow it!
His presence changed my heart.
Snoring and unconcealed flatulence freely proffered.
Whew! He is also a hairy fellow.

Now, don’t get me wrong.
These are more stated facts than complaints.
I knew he had issues
from our first meeting.
Rescued him from a bad situation.
Besides, I was tired of being alone.
I needed to be needed.
Needed to be tethered
to a warm loving soul.
He offered unconditional loving loyalty.
I hungrily accepted it.
A buff-colored Cocker Spaniel rescue,
who needed a forever home
found it with me.
Wasn’t sure I wanted a dog.
Certainly, sure now.
Sir Duke Ludwig,
My Family
