Exceptional

My happy place on the headland.

Surrounded by Wild Majesty

by LisaMay

My happy place is dangerous and lonely —
it’s a wild place, with room for me only.
I go there to get away from it all.
I can cry my eyes out, have a bawl.
That sounds strange for a ‘happy place’,
but after my tears leave their trace,
I can lift up my eyes and feel His grace.

The wild majesty of nature surrounds,
’midst the call of gulls and pounding surf sounds.
I stand on that rock and bow my head.
I have no fear, I’m not filled with dread,
for I know He’s with me to hear my prayers,
to uplift my soul and show that he cares.
Through nature’s gifts, my spirit repairs.

Why provide such a feast for troubled eyes,
if not to enliven with reverent sighs?
I watch the waves, their ins and their outs,
and leave behind my worrisome doubts.
His goodness and mercy knows how to restore.
A penguin arrives and touches the shore —
how can I be unhappy any more?

Author note:
The photo shows a yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho) arriving on a beach near the city where I live.
The third stanza contains a reference to Psalm 23:6 (KJV): 'Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.'
