We pledged our future.

Eyes Bright With Promise

Our present was rosy;
the future we’d share.
Memories linger
of comfort and care.
Now my special other
is elusive as mist.
He’s been and he’s gone;
I burn where he kissed.

Eyes bright with promise
we pledged we’d be true.
Our lives intertwined
as our joys did accrue.
We talked and we worked
side-by-side as a team;
laughter and loving
was our guiding theme.

Oh, wind back the years
since we’ve been apart.
I’ve shed many tears
since he broke my heart.
My dream man arrived —
was he all in my head?
Why isn’t he here?
He’s in another’s bed.

He was a dog man
and I had my cat.
Should I have noted
the difference in that?
As years kept on passing
my love for him grew,
but he had been wanting
a challenge or two.

For life has diversions
and I lost my man.
How cruel is harsh fate
when it changes our plan.
My dreams are now empty
and nights are so cold.
My heart hides its secrets,
beats on unconsoled.

Take note of my tale
you smug wives out there.
Take care of your man,
place his glass by his chair,
but some dogs sniff breezes
and run away quick
to a young bitch in heat.
Then it’s all about dick.

Writing Prompt
Hearing the Beach Boys sing, I teared up thinking what my special person means to me. How do you feel about yours?

Author Note:
You can tell from the bitterness in my words that I lost the love of my life to a younger woman.
