When I take out my notebook
And pick up my pencil to write
I look for a subject that will hook
The reader and even invite
Him/her her into my heart and mind
I hope my words have spontaneity
And both instructive and kind
With a little originality

Even though they follow a format
A certain meter or rhyme
I hope it sounds like a cordial chat
That's had at the table at mealtime
Or a story that's well known
And brings peace and gaiety
With some writing talent shown
