A Son's Journey Toward Love

“Mommy, do you think I’m gay?
I really hope I’m not
I’m different than the other boys
that’s what my friends all thought.”
The way he acted, spoke and moved
Indicated that was true,
But hardship comes with such a life,
So what was she to do?
“It matters not the way you act,
Or how you speak or play;
The only thing that matters is:
You don’t like boys ‘that’ way!”
He thought a bit and wandered off
She sighed in real relief
And went to pray it was not so,
For such was her belief.
He pushed it down for many years
And tried so hard to hide it
But finally, he stopped the lie
His mind could not abide it.
He brought Rob home to meet his mom
Was worried she’d disown him
But she’d loved him no matter what
For as long as she had known him

Fast forward now for several years
He and Rob were still together
They knew by then there was no doubt
Their love would last forever
The wedding was a special time
Love showed in every vow
If there was any doubt before
It was forgotten now
Their four-year anniversary
They celebrate this year
Their love gets stronger every day
They’re proud to say they’re queer.
For those that think a love like this
Is dirty, sinful, phony,
Judge and you’ll be judged, my friend
You reek of sanctimony
