Our Country

Our country has become the house divided Lincoln feared
No one knows how much longer it will continue to stand

Many accept an egotistic leader who lies and defies the law
Followers cheer him as he chops at the foundation of our house
They fear if they try to stop him, they will suffer angry retaliation

Therefore, they back him or remain silent regarding his attempt
To steal an election by disrupting the peaceful transfer of power
They shamefully ignore the vile vehemence he sparked
Claiming the January 6th insurrection as “legitimate political discourse.”

Now those that favor the fabricated allegation of a stolen election
Have come to believe they have the power to legitimatize a
Covertly held white supremacy agenda by unleashing a
Vengeful, long held, soul sequestered platform of actions
Highlighted by voter suppression, book banning
History denying, curriculum tampering along with
Ignoring social truths and scientific facts

I shudder at their thinking after reading the positions
Voiced by many Republican political candidates who
Give credence to the “big lie” of a Trump victory
And accept the maiming and killing police officers
Saying, “It was just some tourists who were
Dissatisfied with the outcome of the election.”

Shame on those in power and their cohorts who fail
To speak out against creeping Autocracy, and give
Approval to methods brashly used by their leader

Fear, intimidation, retaliation and disinformation
Such are the weapons of an autocratic dictator
These methods should be certainly condemned
By all who love our house of democracy

Hateful people shun the concept of equality for all
Eschew the words of Emma Lazarus speaking
As Lady Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”

Shame on all officer-holders who deny their
Sworn obligation, “To support and defend the
Constitution of the United States against
All enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Enough said.
