Between You, Me and the Gatepost

by Barry Penfold

Between you, me and the gatepost
How often said and heard
A statement made in confidence
The closely guarded word
The knowing look, the elbow nudged
The eyelid closed; to wink.
All these gestures~ facial signs
The common ,binding link
A friendly ear~a kindly tongue
In things that matter most
A secret shared between two friends
And the ever silent gatepost.

No Rules Poetry Contest contest entry

Gates and gateposts were common many years ago. They were very often the place to meet and talk. A record of those conversations remain with the gatepost.
