Intruder in the House

by pome lover

There’s an uninvited person in my mirror
I think it is my ex-mother-in-law;
Or maybe it’s her ghost; I can’t be certain,
It seems she always leaves me feeling raw.

She “says”, ‘Stand up straight! You look like Grandma Moses!
Hold your stomach in, for pity’s sake!’
It’s effective, if not rather jolting,
Until I get to kitchen, to partake.

Problem is, I have to pass back by her.
And once again, it’s her old Jab, jab, jab
I think she’d like to send me, in an instant,
For daily sessions in posture rehab.

One would think a lesson to be learned, here,
From every day reminders, would be that
I’d be snapping-to with back of iron,
Like the sergeant says, “And I mean, STAT!”

But, I’ve found a happier solution;
The angst I had been feeling, I forsook.
Don’t know why it didn’t occur sooner:
Erase her, or for Pete’s sake, just don’t look.
