Can someone explain what in the world is wrong with some people these days? It seems you can not turn the news on television, or open yahoo, or much of anywhere else for that matter, without seeing multiple cases of this crime occurring. I decided to use this one because it seems to pretty much epitomize what this Editorial is about.
A Moss Point, Mississippi military veteran faked his own death in Orange Beach, Alabama. He left a suicide note, and a gun, in a small boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Then he tried to disappear in lieu of turning himself in to the authorities to face charges for what he did when he was thirty-eight years old.
Seems perhaps he was not clever enough to get away with his assaults in 2018, because two years later he was apprehended in a RV park in Oklahoma using another person's name. At one point, he spent a stint on the US Marshal's Top 15 List of most wanted criminals. Questionable if he enjoyed his journey there. Most do not.
A Jackson County, Mississippi Circuit Judge sentenced this individual, in this situation I will use that term lightly, to 85 years in the steel jungle and a 10,000 dollar fine. Eighty-five years falls way short of what these putrid morons deserve when they commit these unspeakable liberties with victims unable to defend, or protect, themselves from such onslaughts.
Upon sentencing the defendent she stated, "The evidence is overwhelming. It's more evidence than I've probably seen."
The sentence was basically a life in prison one. But, I inquire, was the punishment sufficient for the offenses? The defendent remained emotionless when he was found guilty of:
-nine counts of sexual battery of a minor child
-four counts of touching a child for lustful purposes
-one count of child endangerment
The victim, now fourteen years old, testified the defendent sexually assaulted her at least thirty times beginning in 2016 and ending in 2017. She gave birth to a baby as a result of these attacks.
Above, I questioned if the punishment was sufficient for the offenses? May I suggest, chemical or otherwise, castration should have been included in his sentence?
Of course, instead of taking responsibility for his devious atrocities, the defendent attempted to blame his mental state, a failing relationship, and the victim. Doesn't it always seem in these cases it never is the defendant's fault? At least, not in their minds it is not.
"This is the first time in my 18 years I have ever seen anything so brazen and so vile," words of the case's District Attorney.
I ask again, what in the world is wrong with some people today? There is a whole bunch of things that could be offered to attempt to answer that question. But, I will leave them as fodder for a possible future Editorial.
Being a veteran with a Purple Heart, an award for those who do not know is awarded to military members wounded in the line of battle, in this case in Iraq, does not explain or excuse these sorts of actions. A definite No Sale!
The defendent blamed his mental illness. I state anyone who performs these acts suffers from some form of mental illness or another. However, they do not explain them. He also claimed he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a major problem for many combat soldiers. One I witnessed firsthand during my fourteen year Army career. Not even PTSD excuses his actions.
The defendent also claimed to be heavily medicated, and suffered depressions, that caused his misjudgements. On thirty seperate occasions? Wonder what drugs he could possibly be on that would make him so deviant. I assure you none that were legal. Aren't these excuses nothing more than feeble efforts for defendents to try to gain leniency?
C'mon, you degenerate psychos. Your certain body part, proud of its function as you may be with its designed purpose, must be kept off, and out of, young children. Since you obviously do not know, that is not where your toy belongs. Burn the woodpile down!
And, that is exactly how I see it.
