In memory of children killed at school

Innocence Lost

by Beck Fenton

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
Games in hand the children play

On the sidewalk

Standing still

Immersed in their phones

Games of violence

Are their thrill

They don't notice

They don't see

An unseen shadow creeps in

Like a spider on a web

The clouds rush in

Storm clouds gather

With a downpour

That threatens all

Water will ruin their play

And they go into school

When the bell calls

Sometime later that day

One child realizes

To her dismay

The shadows of a gunman

Looking for a kid to kill

Isn't like the game she plays

Not at all!
