A short tale about step-brothers

Wedding Day Bonus

by RodG

"You gonna dance at the reception?" Davy asked.

"Nah," I said.

"No girlfriend coming?"

I scowled at the carrot-topped step-brother I'd just acquired. All the time Dad had been romancing his mom I'd been back East. But even boarding schools have summer vacations.

"Too bad. I get the second dance with Mom. We've been practicing the box-step."

I groaned. I'd seen the woman twice since my return.

"Let's play catch. I stashed a football in Dad's trunk."

Davy gawked. "We're all dressed up. I get messed up, Mom will kill me, and your father won't be happy."

I grinned devilishly.

Five minutes later, as he raced to catch a spiral pass, he tripped and turned an ankle. Carrying him piggy-back toward the church, I asked, "What will you call him?"

"Who?"

"The man rushing toward us."

"Hi, Dad. I'm okay and Bro here is really strong."
