A Chosen Child

by LisaMay

Now the child is grown.
When first the seed was sown
in recklessness without a care,
no lasting love was there.
The mother thought she would abort
to free her life for fun.
Although a new life had begun,
when the job could not be done
the man just ran.
Unwanted by her mother,
the babe was handed to another,
ready for life and love —
both gifts from heaven above.

The helpless baby wriggled and smiled
in the arms of her new mother.
The besotted parents were beguiled
and swore to one another
to love, protect, and teach their child
as if she were their own.

Oh, how the years have flown.
I know of this because it’s ME.
So glad I didn’t end up in a dish,
just a fetus with no right to be.
I fulfilled a mother’s wish
to love a child unconditionally,
and my own sacred destiny.
She and my Dad gave my life to me.
I found love there, to share heart’s care.
