Mental Health Awareness

by dovemarie

Lots of people are not aware
Of what many others have to bear
And it's not fair
When you have so much to share
But no one will care

Some of us are locked up in seclusion
When our minds are broken with confusion
We are force-medicated with concentrate and injection
Which makes us filled with hate - victims of rejection

Others are workshop clients who slave
Under the superiority of cold-hearted staff
Our sanity is what we are trying to save
But mental health workers just turn away with a laugh

Often we're referred to as "he" or "she,"
As though we were not standing near
They've taken our privileges and our liberty,
Mostly out of their own fear

We are members of dual diagnosis
Addictions as well as psychosis

We've been thrown into our room
Hearts and minds filled with gloom

Paranoid schizophrenic, suicidal or manic depressive,
We're all tossed together, emotionally intensive

Mental illness is so seldom understood
And the treatment sometimes does us no good

Therapists who twist words in sessions
Always under the wrong impressions
Misunderstanding; making us repeat,
Finally we leave their office in defeat

I went through all these bitter days,
And found my way around the maze
Now I've learned new, natural ways
To my Higher Power, I lift my hands in praise
