'Month of May'

by Carolyn Dooley

Every May 1st through May 20th,
for my birthday, my husband would,
sing Marvin Gaye's song "My Girl."
Happiness and joy filled our days, I was his,
"Sunshine, I have no need for money."
Both of us knew there would be no more,
intimacy. We embraced holding hands.
His deteriorating health and laboured,
breathing slowly robbed him.
He was my rock, through thick and thin.
The foundation of our home was stripped away,
turning it into a house of stone.
