Requiem

by Cass Carlton

This day we place your ashes

Into Nature's sacred care

To become part of the Universe

Fire, water earth and air

May these remnants find their place

Upon Creation's breast

With all our love we leave you there

For there you will find rest

When we see the stars at night

We'll say a little prayer

You told us and we know it's true

You're waiting for us there.

One day we'll be together

Our arms entwine again

The life we knew, the love we shared

Forever to remain.

These are the words I composed for the occasion of committing my son's earthly remains (his ashes) to Nature. We found a place along the River Murray where my husband and he used to camp. My elder son took the container out into mid stream and emptied it into the river. I stood on the bank and wept into my daughter-in-law's shoulder. The words were never spoken (out loud) although copies of them were given to members of the extended family. Rest in Peace beloved son. We'll meet again one day.
