Questions for a deer

To a Doe

by Verna Cole Mitchell

Gentle, velvet, brown-eyed doe,
I have answers I would know.

Can you tell me whence you came,
How you got your tender name?

Do you quiver when you hear
Stealthy walk of hunters near?

Scenting danger in the air,
Do you tell your fawns, "Beware"?

As you linger by a stream,
Is within your heart a dream?

While in shaded glens you roam,
Do you wander far from home?

How are you content to graze
Dappled forests all your days?

Why upon men you don't war?
Do you treasure peace much more?

When you shyly steal away,
Do you hope for brighter day?

Though I've questions here for you,
Admiration is your due.
