Tormented

by Sanku

Like a mermaid, I floated in the encircling sea
(my legs had disappeared, my hands frantic)
Pushing the waves I cried,"Let me go, you brutes
Don't hold me back, I have to catch him."

But you were ahead, far ahead.

I surfaced on to the "surf tormented shore"
I was alone but for the mocking hiss of the waves

As the tide of sleep and dream receded
All that left was sediments of bitterness

Even in my dreams I couldn't grasp you.

Recognized

I never thought of surf tormenting the shore .For me surf seems to hug or kiss the shore. So the quoted line from Edgar Allen Poe stayed with me. I think the poem is called 'Dream'.
