Disciples and Belief

by Shirley McLain

Lent is a special time for many Christians all over the world. It is the time that we as a people pay tribute to the sacrifice of Jesus’s time in the desert after his baptism by John the Baptist. In the first week, he was tempted by the devil in various ways. Because he is the Son of God and without sin, the devil didn’t defeat him. Praise God!

The second week of Lent is the Transfiguration. It made complete believers out of three of his disciples, John, his brother James, and Peter. Peter was the disciple who was strongly rebuked by Jesus for telling him that he could not suffer as he had told them.

Jesus did not let anyone know he was taking the three to the mountain top to prove once and for all, he was the Son of God. I think he took his three biggest doubters.

Jesus’s face became as bright as the sun, and his clothes were a brilliant white. I can imagine the disciples would have had a difficult time looking at him. When his father came and told the three disciples how happy he was with his son, the disciples fell to the ground with their faces down in fright of our God.

Besides being blessed by just having the presence of Jesus and God, they also saw Moses and Elijah. This had to be an inspiring time for the three disciples. Peter wanted to build shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. It has been surmised he made the offer to keep Moses and Elijah on earth, since they were ready to leave and return to Heaven. I know if I saw them, I would want them around me as long as possible.

I have read that Moses and Elijah came to show Jesus as the new covenant between God and his people. Their time had been fulfilled.

This would be the forethought of Jesus being sacrificed for the sins of all people if they believed on him. Glory to God!
