Upon the shore I find my way...

Sea Glass

by karenina

Beloved,

I gift myself to you
as amethyst sea glass,
dashed to shore by wanton waves.

There, there, by your feet,
miraculously in your path!

You stoop,
tilt your head,
a curious smile awakening...

Blue eyes smile
as you lift me to your cheek;
aglow with the warmth of the sun.

Sea glass.
Only this,
yet sure and solid and palpable.

Ten thousand beaches and here I have been cast!

Had you turned to gaze out to sea
I would not have known
the beauty of your touch.

One sidestep left or right,
and unrelenting waves
would have tumbled me
back to churning depths,
salty as tears.

Amethyst glass, hardly wide as a quarter...
made new by the press of your thumb
slowly stroking bits of sand away...

Caressed in  your palm
a prism of seven colors radiates;
the rainbow arc of our improbability…

Possess me.

Slip me in your pocket…

So I may rest
with glorious abandon,
made precious by your touch.
