Amidst the Shells

60 WORD DASH Contest Winner
Julie sat crying, but the bullies were gone.
"Why'd you defend her, Petey?" asked Mr. Grayson, my teacher, as he attended to my split lip and black eye.
"Because Gramps always said, 'Take your lumps, but defend the weak'."
Finished, Mr. Grayson stood me up . . . then embraced me.
"Wha--?"
"Oh, Petey, you're that one pearl amidst all the broken shells!"
