How Are You, Really?

by The Undefeated

It's hard to always be searching
for the next part of your life.
It's hard to never feel like you have control
Over the emotions you'll feel because circumstances
Are always changing.
It's hard to stay bright and hopeful
When dark clouds loom
And beasts rage in the night.
It's hard to smile
When I feel like I'm failing.
And that's valid and real

But at the same time
It's easy to smile for the glittering
Of joy in my friends eyes
It's easy to laugh
If they're laughing with me
And it's a pleasure to meet new people
Who can delve deep and peel back
The layer of protection that we all wear
Allowing me to see the soul
Underneath the finely wrapped car

It's funny and even encouraging
To find the soul willing to own their pain
And at the same time be able to draw the boundary and not talk about it
Luring the uncomfortable comedian
Into a false sense of security
And snatching it back from his greedy humorous hands

It's hard to sing fix you
When all I want
Is to fix me
It's hard to share parts of myself
That I've felt ashamed of for so long
It's hard to share my insecure desires
And the hopes I've hidden deep

But it's easy when a guy I've never met, says I nearly brought him to tears
When people say they really felt what I said
When friends come and hug me afterwards; holding on
a little harder
and a little longer

There's days when the hard things seem like they outnumber
the good ones
But there's days the sun shines brighter when they smile
When the firelight flickers in their eyes
When the joy of the presence of friends turns everything to gold

And I'll hold onto the Midas days to tide me over the days of scarcity
Because I know the golden moments will come
I just have to be patient
I hate patience
But I live for the golden moments
I'll keep living
for the golden moments

Sincerely yours,
