Doggone It!

Lights, Camera....Action?

by Boogienights

"We need an animal", the director said,
"AND QUICK!", for the film he was making.
A large and fierce dog would be great,
the shelter had lots for the taking.

His assistant, Joe, drove there with cash in hand,
a waiting period, there was, to adopt.
But to a strict schedule they had to adhere,
so that rule, with a bribe, was soon dropped.

The director was just short of losing his mind,
when his assistant, with Pit Bull in tow,
showed up before they lost their good light,
and he said, "Let's get on with this show".

The genre was horror, or a thriller perhaps,
not too sure, but there'd be lots of gore.
About a dog, kind of like Cujo, but not.
A low budget B film, nothing more.

The highly trained dog they had at the start,
had dropped dead, desperation set in.
So, they'd have to make do with this ugly mutt,
the director thought, I just can't win.

But still, he yelled, "Action!", fake blood was applied,
a ball was thrown, and "Rover" ran.
On the attack, that's how it appeared,
soon the actress's screaming began.

But, menacing? No, he just wagged his tail,
at the assistant's feet he dropped the ball.
Saliva dripped down from a mouth full of fangs,
he looked scary but wasn't at all.

They held up a steak, just out of his reach,
thinking he would go crazy, but no.
He just laid down, when he knew what was up,
refusing to put on a show.

He was much smarter than most who were there,
he'd been through this crap once before.
Sit up, roll over, and beg on demand,
he wasn't down with that, anymore.

Long story short, the production shut down,
the director had just 'bout enough.
To hell with film making and dogs who can't act,
back to doing voice-overs and stuff.

For Bentley the Pit Bull, it all ended well,
assistant Joe thought that he was so sweet.
The "scariest", friendliest dog found a home,
sleeping sound at his new owner's feet.
