The Riotous Roan

by Chris Davies

Your head hung low, spent and shameful,
Grazing on grasses, calm and baleful.
I lay on the ground along with the saddle
Cussing at you, you traitorous animal.

Our time here on earth is unbearably short
But, "I'm gonna break you," I said with a snort.
I picked myself up and checked all my bones,
My body answered with terrible groans.

"You're a horror of a horse with a terrible temper."
You looked at me and answered with a whimper.
I picked up the saddle and threw it on your back,
Fastened the girth and pulled up the slack.

It was then that I noticed a nasty little burr
Stuck to your saddle cloth, sharp as a spur.
I picked it off and tossed it away
Is this the way a horse has his say?

If ever you ride and don't want to get bucked
Best check for those burrs so you won't get chucked.
