Our Grand Old House

by Boogienights

Our house was built in 1893,
it's solid brick and stands three stories tall.
The plumbing in it's pretty shot to hell,
in the upstairs bathroom mold is on the wall.

The window's stuck, there is no bathroom vent.
In fact, a whole remodel might be nice.
I've got some estimates, they're way too high,
I'm thinking twice, I can't afford the price.

There are three fireplaces, one walled up,
it was that way, day one, when we moved in.
I'd like to break the wall and take a peek,
but what if I can't put it up again?

They don't work, so decorative is their function,
hold Christmas, Halloween, and Easter stuff.
Put on display to celebrate each season,
wish logs could burn, but maybe that's enough.

It has a lot of windows that need washing,
but many are too big, so I just don't
Our wooden floors could use a going over,
but rugs work too, so probably I won't.

Our house has both an attic and a basement,
the latter has been cluttered up with junk.
Our sewer line backed up, the pipe is ancient,
it flooded; stuff was thrown, because it stunk.

The heating costs in winter are the highest,
and still, it's cold, the wind just blows right through.
We dress for living in the artic circle,
it's either that, or frostbite will ensue.

The kitchen's tiny, think it was a closet.
Reconfigured to a duplex at one time.
Not elegant, like in the 1800's,
but for our family, it has worked just fine.

Our house is old, it seems like a disaster,
a money pit for sure, I can't deny.
But memories still linger, made in these walls,
in the thirty plus years that have fast flown by.

In every nook and cranny, I can see them,
my kids who grew up calling this house home.
Filled with lots of laughter, love, and family,
this grand old house that we all call our own.
