A story about a man and a river

Change

by CD Richards

The old man returned to the river,
to a place he had found in his youth;
with thoughts of assuaging his troubles
by setting behind him the truth:

that decades of 'progress' unfettered
weighed heavily now on his mind
and the pace of his life left him fearful
in a world he perceived as unkind.

So he sought solace in the familiar,
by the river, where time seemed to slow;
and the sunlight at play on the water
took him back to his life long ago.

But cruel is the clock's endless ticking
and savage the passage of time;
the desire to resummon the past is
a wish without reason or rhyme.

As he sat gazing over the river,
he knew he had failed in his plan;
for the water was not the same water
and the man was no more the same man.
