Rebirth seen from many angles

by Theodore McDowell

God's second creation,
in a stunning moment
he touched my withered soul,
made dead bones dance,
unwound the burial cloth.
Metaphors of transfiguration
burst like newly created stars
filling my universe:

An eternal word sparks
off the verse
of an heirloom Bible.
A nocturnal flower
in the darkness.
A coin
in a beggar’s bowl.
A gardener prunes
branches from a vine,
fruit abounds.
Smooth rocks found
in a riverbed
slay a giant.
Clouded cataracts removed,
a rainbow
of colors revives.
Tectonic plates shift,
moving earth
below the feet.
A blind saxophone player
sight into sound.
A blast furnace purges slag,
turns molten iron
into steel.
A prayer
a bitter heart.
Aspen leaves
to the slightest breeze.
