Traveling to where I've always been

Traveling Home

by Theodore McDowell

Your brilliance eclipses the sun,
oh Lord.
The sun’s light turns to darkness
when I stare into Your glory.
I long to experience You
as breath filling lungs,
silence taming thoughts,
jazz spilling joy from the horn,
and then my soul
will tap dance before You
like a Broadway star.
Why then am I restless
for the hero’s journey,
to conquer promised lands,
the slingshot taut
to slay giants,
songs with glasses raised
to bravery and lore,
until I kneel
before the graves
of fallen comrades
shedding tears.
Oh, Lord,
You are stronger than a twined rope,
with strands of striving and stillness.
Thank you for the thrill of dust
on sandals as I follow You along dirt roads,
traveling lightly with faith and hope.
Thank you for the clang and clash of prayers
as the battle is joined in heavenly realms.
You quiet my doubts and fears
within the safe haven of Your presence.
No matter how far and wide I must journey,
how many wildernesses I must endure,
You assure me I have already arrived.
