The Symbol

Many years ago, I handed my wife a gift-wrapped box
She smiled and said, “My birthday is months away.”
I know I said, “But go ahead and open it, anyway.”

She took the box from my hands and shook it.
“What is it? It’s kind of heavy, isn’t it?”
Unwrapped the paper and lifted the cover

My gift bundled in soft cuddles of tissue
She carefully read the card, which said,
"Thank you for being my rock upon which
I have been able to build a new life."

All these years later that granite rock
Has a special place on the corner of the
Night table on her side of our bed.
