Strangers

My parents were the sweetest,
they loved me very much.
They always had a smile for me,
both had a gentle touch.

But my parents had a secret,
that I recently found out.
They had a child years ago
I didn't know about.

Dad met my mom in England,
a soldier, World War Two.
They married and had a baby,
that's a fact I never knew.

My mother was a war bride,
to America she came.
They left their baby son behind,
and that is just a shame.

No doubt our parents loved us,
my sister, brother, me,
but it's just hard to find out
we were four instead of three.

They kept their secret through the years,
and nothing was revealed.
Must have struggled with this knowledge,
wonder if they ever healed.

Everybody has their reasons
for doing what they do,
but I feel bad for that child
and what he was put through.

My mom and dad are gone now,
but questions still remain.
Why did they leave their boy behind?
The whole thing seems insane.

My sister and my brother,
they both have passed away.
But still a brother out there
 searched forever and a day.

Since then, we've exchanged photos,
his story is quite bad.
Left with my mother's sister,
foster care next, that's so sad.

Why did my father leave him?
Dad was just so good to me.
I'll never understand it,
how this all came to be.

How could my mother leave him?
In England he resides,
I'm no longer the only left,
my shock can't be disguised.

Excited I am to know him,
only wish I knew before.
An ocean is between us,
he is on a different shore.

Wish I knew my parents' reasons,
did they think about their child?
This should only be in movies,
not in my life, this is wild.

So now I'll see what happens next,
I'm curious and scared.
I'm sure he feels the same as me,
and wonders how I fared.

I'm glad that he has searched me out,
There's mem'ries we can share.
We've Iost much time, there is no doubt
I'll show him that I care.

Just in the last week I have been contacted by someone who had been searching for his biological family. He has provided proof of being my brother and he looks exactly like our father. I am in shock but excited to get to know him.
