R.I.P. My first love

My first car

by jenintorre

It was my favourite car
back in the seventies, in Nottingham,
a real banger but I loved it as it was my first.
Quite an unusual mode of transport really
but it was all I could afford in those days.

It consisted of a Hillman Imp
and a Triumph Herald, moulded into one.
A good little runner for the price.

It was a bit chilly in the winter
as the heater didn't work
and the windows wouldn't close
but I wrapped up really well.

After a few weeks of driving
it started to have slight problems.
The gear stick kept jumping out of its socket
and landing on the back seat
but I usually managed to turn around,
grab it and push it back in
without having to stop the car.

Shortly after that it developed an oil leak
so I had to keep stopping to pour in more oil
which was quite expensive
but not as dear as paying for repairs.

I took all these things in my stride
and had many happy months of driving
until it packed in altogether.
